We reach him for an exclusive interview and he’s very gentle and patient with us and give us those answers.

First of all, thanks for the interview because we consider you one the most expert person on these special bikes:

1) When did it start your interest for Marathones ?
(Quando è iniziato il tuo interesse per le Marathon ?)
My interest began in 2009 when a good friend of me came by me at home with a marathon second series. I immediately fell in love !
(Nel 2009 quando un caro amico è venuto a casa mia con una seconda serie, è stato un colpo di fulmine)
2) Did you remember how did you buy the first one ?
(Ricordi la prima che hai avuto ?)
Yes, of course. The same friend found one far away in France. He was not interested and asked me if I could be interested. We looked for her in the same week. The bike was, unfortunately, no more in his “race configuration” and I took several years to rebuilt her as she looks today.
(Ovviamente, lo stesso amico ne trovó una molto lontano in Francia, lui non era interessato e mi chiese se io lo fossi; andai a vederla la medesima settimana. La moto purtroppo non era più “da gara” e ci ho messo diversi anni a restaurarla come appare adesso).
3) How many marathones have you got ?
(Quante Marathon hai avuto ?)
I had 5 ones. Now “only” 3 are still here. One of the 2 bikes I sold is now in a museum in GB.
(Ne ho avute 5, ora ne ho “solo” 3; una di quelle che ho venduto si trova in un museo in Inghilterra)
4) Why do you consider that bike so special ?
(Cos’ha di speciale una Marathon ?)
First of all I like the design of the bike. Big and beautiful. The second thing is the story around the bikes. I make a lot of searches for parts, informations, etc… and during this time I also had a lot of contacts with pilots and organizers of that adventure. That was very interested and rewarding.
(Prima di tutto mi piace il design: grande e stupenda. La seconda cosa è la sua storia: ho fatto molte ricerche sulle sue caratteristiche e nel corso del tempo ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere i piloti, gli organizzatori di quell’avventura; molto interessante e appagante)
5) What does it happen when you use them ? Are other bikers curious ?
(Cosa succede quando le usi, gli altri motociclisti sono incuriositi ?)
This is depending of where I’m going with the old ladies. In a bike meeting, yes. Most of the time, some persons are coming to me in order to get more information. On the road I pass quite discreetly.
(Dipende: ad un raduno il più delle volte arrivano appassionati a chiedermi informazioni. Sulla strada invece passo abbastanza inosservato)
6) How many Marathones do you think are still on the road ?
(Quante Marathon pensi ci siano ancora in giro ?)
Good question… I know about approximately 20 1st series bikes still alive. About the second series it is quite difficult to say. ½ have been sold for the Dakar 90 and the other ½ part to private clients (in Italy and France). I think there are less 2nd series that 1st still alive but I couldn’t guarantee it.
(Bella domanda, credo circa 20 prima serie; sulla seconda serie è più difficile: metá sono state vendute per la Dakar del 1990 e l’altra metà sono andate a clienti privati (italiani e francesi. Penso che ci siano in giro meno seconde serie che prime, ma non lo posso garantire con certezza).
7) Did you ever meet an original Marathones biker ? Someone who runs in the desert with these bike ?
(Hai mai incontrato un pilota Marathon, qualcuno che ha corso nel deserto con queste moto ?)
I got lot of contacts by emails and phone with pilots but I meet Mr Mazet, Mr Heitz and Mr Garret. Very interesting to speak with such persons.
(Ho avuto diversi contatti via email e telefono con diversi piloti, ma personalmente ho conosciuto Mazet, Heitz e Garret…davvero interessante parlare con loro).
8) Are there curious stories about your bike ?
(Qualche aneddoto sulle tue moto ?)
Maybe about my last marathon. I go in touch with the pilot some years ago. He was giving to me him clothes, his helmet and his tank bag. 2 or 3 years later I found a marathon but in a bad condition and no informations about his history. I made a lot of searches and found out that this bike was the bike of that pilot !!! (Nicolas Morand-Monteil). Incredible ! This bikes participated to 3 Dakars (89/90/91). NMM does the first one and then he lent the bike to an Japanese guy (Nambu).
(Forse riguardo l’ultima arrivata: ero in contatto con un pilota anni fa, mi aveva anche dato l’abbigliamento, il casco e la borsetta per il serbatoio. 2 o 3 anni dopo ho trovato una Marathon ma era messa male e senza informazioni. Ho fatto diverse ricerche e ho scoperto che era proprio la moto del mio amico pilota. Incredibile !!! Questa moto aveva fatto 3 Dakar (dall’89 al 91). Nicolas era stato il primo e poi aveva noleggiato la moto ad un giapponese (Nambu)
9) What is the most important memorabilia or item or object that you have in your collection ?
(Qual’è il pezzo più importante della tua collezione ?)
Some parts are very rare like the blue leather bag on the tank or the additional rear light. I also have an original outfit and some documentations from 1988/89
(Alcuni pezzi sono davvero rarissimi, come la borsetta sul serbatoio o la luce rossa posteriore. Ho anche l’abbigliamento originale e altri documenti)
10) Do you ride other bikes or only Marathones ?
(Oltre alla Marathon, hai altre moto ?)
Indeed. I also have a little collection of 1970/1980/1990 bikes like CB750F, Dominator, Ténéré’s, XT or DR Djebel. I also have a CRF1000 Adventure Sports. The better of all is still the RD03.
(Certo, ho una collezione di moto dal 1970 al 1990 come il CB750F, Dominator, Ténéré’s, XT or DR Djebel. Ho anche l’Africa nuova…ma la migliore rimane sempre la RD03.
